Open letter to Chloe Smith following her vote to support Boris Johnson.

Dear Chloe Smith MP,

As councillors in your Norwich North constituency, we are calling on you to hold a public meeting to explain to your constituents why you decided to support Boris Johnson in a vote on whether he could remain as Prime Minister. We believe this decision doesn’t reflect what the voters in our ward, and elsewhere in your constituency, would want you to have done. People are angry, they feel betrayed and they feel let down by Boris Johnson.

This only echoes a wider feeling of distrust in our entire political system whereby a handful of Tory MP’s are able to decide who runs the country. Given this, we expect you to take this responsibility seriously, representing the people of Norwich North. By doing so, you should not shy away from explaining to your constituents the reasons behind your decision.

On Twitter, you defended your decision, stating that Norwich North voted for the Prime Minister in 2019 arguing that it is ‘right to deliver on that trust’. With polls now showing that a majority of Britons want the Prime Minister to resign, the trust he was given in 2019 by this constituency has been lost.

Residents in Sewell have told us how they are struggling with the spiralling cost of living crisis. They’ve told us that they feel let down by a government which held parties while asking all of us to stay at home. They deserve politicians who are honest with them, and who dedicate time to improving their lives rather than putting their own political careers first.

If you truly believe in rebuilding the trust of your constituents, and if you truly believe that Boris Johnson is the best person to lead our country, explain your reasons to the people of Norwich North and listen to their concerns. We deserve a public meeting.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Alex Catt and Councillor Gary Champion
