New leader for Greens on city council

2 October 2015

The Green Party on Norwich City Council have today announced a new leader for their group, Councillor Ash Haynes.

Councillor Haynes has represented Town Close ward on the City Council since 2010. She has a particular interest in housing issues and has previously campaigned for the scrapping of the Bedroom Tax as well as for Norwich City Council not to evict tenants due to it. When not a being councillor, she’s a mum to her daughter Meredith.

Councillor Haynes said: “I’m pleased to be elected as leader of the Green group on Norwich City Council and hope I can continue Andrew’s excellent work. I’m looking forward to campaigning for better consultations with residents in the city, for high-quality housing, and to retain essential services residents rely on.”

Councillor Andrew Boswell, the previous group leader, has stood down as leader to devote more time to family, wider City and County council work, and environmental campaigning on long-term issues such as climate change. He said: “It has been a huge privilege to lead the City Greens for the past two years at a time when local Government is under huge pressure. The people in the group are everything, and together we have pushed the Council to be more open and democratic, more environmentally responsible and more caring to residents. I’m extremely pleased Ash Haynes has been chosen to take these successes forward, and look forward to working with her.”

The group has also elected two deputy leaders, Councillor Martin Schmierer and Councillor Paul Neale. Councillor Schmierer was elected in May 2015 to represent Mancroft ward, and Councillor Neale has been a councillor for Town Close since 2012.
