The Green Party has condemned the government’s decision to approve plans for the “vastly overpriced” Hinkley Point nuclear power station in Somerset.
Co-leader Caroline Lucas said:
“It is truly absurd that the Government plans to plough billions of taxpayers’ money into this vastly overpriced project, and has done so without informing Parliament of the true costs. It is even more absurd that they are doing so at the same time as reducing support for cheaper, safer and more reliable alternatives.
“Instead of investing in this eye-wateringly expensive white-elephant, the government should be doing all it can to support offshore wind, energy efficiency and innovative new technologies, such as energy storage.”
Chinese-built nuclear power stations in the East of England have also moved a step closer to reality following the announcement, with China General Nuclear reportedly planning to submit plans for a plant at Bradwell in Essex within weeks. Another plant is also planned for Sizewell in Suffolk.
Green Party councillor Martin Schmierer commented on the implications for the East:
“I was baffled by the government’s decision to approve the new £18bn Hinkley Point nuclear power station. It is financially reckless and environmentally illogical to commit to a new generation of nuclear power plants when so many other renewable energy options are available.
“We must now be on our guard against similarly expensive and dangerous deals going ahead in our region.”
