City Council Green Group Elects New Leader
The 15 strong Green Group of councillors, which forms the main opposition at city hall, has a new leader for this civic year.

Alex Catt, who was previously deputy leader and is a Sewell councillor has been elected by his group. He said: “I’m really proud to take on the role of leader of the Green group in Norwich. Politics is broken. Last year, the new Labour government promised change but have left people feeling misled by continuing the Conservative’s programme of austerity and targeting the most vulnerable, whether that is slashing the winter fuel allowance, brutal cuts to disabled people or keeping the two-child benefit cap. Meanwhile energy bills and the cost-of-living continues to rise for ordinary people trying to get by. In Norwich, it is a simple choice of Green or Labour, and our priority will always be standing up for people against Labour’s austerity, championing the open and diverse communities we all take pride in and to hold a complacent Labour-run council to account in delivering the services people need with value for money. Lucy Galvin has done just that for the past three years and I’m delighted to continue that work with her.”

He is replacing Lucy Galvin, group leader since 2021, prior to which she was deputy leader twice. A councillor for 8 years, she initially represented Wensum and now Nelson ward. “Due to recently increased professional and family commitments, I have stepped back from the group leader role. We have achieved a lot in recent years, and I am delighted to continue as deputy group leader, to support the group in its ongoing growth and success,” she said.
