Councillors and candidates from Norwich Green Party will be launching their new manifesto for the 2011 local elections outside the Forum at 3pm on Thursday 7th April.

6 April 2011

“This year’s manifesto reflects the position the city has been put into by unfair national cuts. The Conservative and Liberal Democrat government has ensured that Norwich will not have enough money for essential services to be funded in the near future. Green Party policies, nationally, would have protected jobs in Norwich, and Green Party councillors are fighting, under the current government, to save jobs and services.”

The Green Party, which is just two seats behind Labour at City Hall, is challenging large-scale development around Norwich and wants to stop further privatisation of public services, which has happened under both Conservative and Labour governments. Green councillors also want the city council to be more open, and ready to hear local residents’ views, than it has been in the last few years under Labour.

A theme of the Green Party policies is making the city more self-sufficient, by encouraging investment in local jobs and businesses and by growing food locally to support the local economy. Using renewable energy schemes to create income for the city and for individual households, will also bring economic benefits.

The Green Party wants to improve the city, without changing its character or expanding it too much.

Robert Laird, Green Party candidate for University ward said:

“We want to see fulfilling jobs created for people within their communities. School leavers and students need to know it’s possible for them to get jobs and have something to work towards.”

Other main election pledges for the Green Party are to lobby the Government for a fairer tax system and to protect the NHS, as well as protecting and increasing open spaces in the city, providing parks, allotments and community gardens.
