Green Party slams “reckless” decision to approve rugby club move to Yare Valley

10 November 2016

Norwich Green Party has condemned the decision to approve an application to move Norwich Rugby Club to the University of East Anglia, which will see a two-storey clubhouse, floodlit pitches and 300 parking spaces built in the Yare Valley.

South Norfolk District Council’s planning committee voted by seven votes to four to approve the application, despite receiving more than 250 objections.

Councillor Martin Schmierer said: “This reckless decision is a disaster for the Yare Valley and for the people of Norwich. This beautiful unspoilt area is home to many kinds of wildlife and is highly valued by the many people who visit it, but its character will now be destroyed by a completely unnecessary development.

“The university has ploughed on in the face of widespread opposition, making a mockery of its supposed commitment to environmental issues.

“This application is clearly not just about sports pitches: it’s an excuse for the university to build a huge car park and a new road instead of keeping its promises on sustainable transport.”

The Yare Valley Society, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Colney and Cringleford parish councils and numerous UEA staff objected to the proposals, with Norwich City Council also expressing concern about the “over-intensive” development.
