Waste Free Wensum

20 September 2019

Norwich Green Party campaigners and the local community are getting together by the River Wensum in Norwich on Saturday 28th September to clear litter from the river and surrounding area. This is our contribution to World Rivers Day which is celebrated across the planet each September, aiming to highlight the many values and benefits of our rivers and the importance of looking after them.

Green Party City Councillor Nigel Utton said:

“Rivers all over the world face a wide range of threats including from the waste, much of it plastic, which is thrown into urban  waterways on a daily basis.  This waste flows down into our seas and oceans and fuels the global contamination problem that’s so damaging to marine life.  Only our active involvement in keeping our rivers clean will ensure their well-being for the future.  Community actions such as these offer opportunities for everyone to help keep our planet clean and healthy.”

Pub & Paddle are again supporting the event by providing canoes for those who like to be on the water, although there’ll also be plenty to tidy up on the river banks. The charity Rivercare will be supplying gloves, litter-grabbers and bags and the Broads Authority will be helping us with their support boat. The Red Lion pub by Bishop Bridge will be kindly providing free light refreshments after the event.

Green Party activist Peter Cutting has successfully organised several such events and is encouraging everyone to come along and help:

“This time we’ll be joined by members of the GoodGym group who combine a love of running with community action.  They run to places where there is a need, do whatever is required at top speed and then continue their run.  But fear not, there’ll be an abundance of litter for everyone to collect so there’ll be plenty to do even for the less athletic of us!”

The river clean-up is part of an on-going Norwich Green Party campaign to reduce the amount of disposable plastic we throw away and find alternatives to single-use plastic items.

Anyone interested in taking part should come along to the Bishopbridge on Bishopgate in Norwich on Saturday 28th September from 10.30am to register for an 11am start.  To reserve a place in a canoe or for further information please contact Peter Cutting in advance on: plasticpeter@verrotech.com
