Historic wins across the East

Historic WINS across the East!

It’s been a truly historic election in the East, and it would take too long to list every great achievement, so here is just a small sample:

  • Mid Suffolk Green Party smashed predictions and made history by becoming the first Green Party in the northern hemisphere with a overall majority control of a council. Greens doubled(!) their number of councillors and now hold 24 (or 70.5%) of the 34 seats!
  • History was also made in East Hertfordshire where Greens gained 19 councillors (up from 2 in 2019!) to become the largest party on the East Hertfordshire council, where the Tories lost 24 of their 40 seats.
  • The Green Party is now the largest party on Babergh District council, with 10 councillors, and Leigh Jameson won his seat with an unprecedented 89% of the vote.
  • East Suffolk quadrupled their number of Green councillors, becoming the largest party on the East Suffolk Council.
  • Southend-on-Sea and Central Beds had a breakthrough wins, with Richard Longstaff winning Leigh ward with 1042 votes and Susan Clinch winning Ampthill ward with 1330 votes!
  • Possibly the year’s largest swing, of 70% came in Eye, Mid Suffolk, where Lucy Elkin gained 70% of the votes – up from 0% in the last election, when we didn’t stand a candidate.
  • Overall, we gained 57 new councillors in the East of England, more than the Lib Dems, and 24% of the 241 new Green councillors gained across the country!
